Grand Opening for South St. Home
This past December, after over 20 years of planning and saving for Geneva’s first group home, the Geneva 708 Mental Health Board purchased a house at 1980 South St., Geneva. Soon after, they donated the home to the Association for Individual Development. Now after many months of rehab and fundraising the house has now become a new home to five local residents with developmental disabilities.
AID and the Geneva 708 Mental Health Board have collaborated on a fundraising effort to transform the single-family house into an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant home.
Support from the community has been overwhelming, and AID would like to thank some of the major contributors to this project (contributors are listed in alphabetical order): Claddagh Irish Pub Fundraiser, Community Foundation of the Fox Valley, the City of Geneva, Geneva 708 Mental Health Board, Geneva Community Chest, Gordon Flesch Company, Kane County Community Development Block Program, Kane County Riverboat Grant, the Dellora A. and Lester J. Norris Foundation, Mr. and Mrs. Tom and Debbie Russo, the Shodeen Family Foundation and Tri-State Carpet and Decorating Inc.-Mr. and Mrs. Ron Benzschawel.
The community is invited to a grand opening for the home on October 13 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. AID invites any and all community members, families, friends, neighbors and supporters to attend. A tour of the house will be given and refreshments will be served.

The Illinois Doomsday budget has become a reality

The impact of this Doomsday budget on our clients, families and staff has been substantial:
- AID services for more than 1,100 AID clients stopped at day’s end on June 30, 2009
- 7 AID programs closed on July 1st. These programs were: Early Intervention, Respite, Regular Work, Supported Living, DD Case Management, Psychiatric Services and Psychosocial Rehab.
- 5 programs are being cut 15-50% These programs include: Vocational Development (job coaching and employment), Mental Health Supported and Supervised Living, Crisis Intervention, and closure of 1 CILA home for persons with Developmental Disabilities
- 65 AID staff positions and 6 contract psychiatrists were eliminated on July 1st
- Respite staff hired by families (about 200) were let go
More cuts may be needed. Please help AID in this critical time in one of the following ways:
1. Write, call or email your State Legislators - Save our Services - Visit www.votesmart.org to find out who your representative is.
2. Contribute to the AID Survival Kit with a donation of any size...

$10 will help save one hour of respite a week for a family of an individual with profound disabilities
$50 will help to restore job assistance to the most underserved population
$100 will assist a challenged individual to continue independence in his/her own home
$250 will assist with medical/pharmaceutical/psychiatric services
Any amount will serve to benefit your friends, family and neighbors
PLEASE help us reverse these cuts!
Please thank these legislators: Senator Michael Noland (Elgin) and Representative Linda Chapa LaVia (Aurora). We need to urge the rest of our elected officials to find a solution to fully fund services and prevent the Doomsday cuts!
